THE SIX GUNAS
"Treat success and failure, profit and loss, happy occurrences and unhappy ones just the same. ... And that is what Rama demonstrates through His responses to His father's orders and Kaikeyi's wishes."- lord Krishna
The first is 'Sham' which means concentration of the mind. The work we are doing, our whole mind should be focused on that work. If unnecessary resolution options are coming into our minds, then we should not focus our attention on them. You should complete your work with full dedication.
The second one is strength. That is control of one's senses (eyes, nose, ears, etc.). We should focus our senses only on our work to be done in the present. Don't waste time on outside things. Control over senses means control over the mind which will ultimately result in supreme peace and infinite bliss. The world is always pure and true, it's our mind that matters. Our mind is a beautiful place, it should not be an accumulation of doubts and fears, a control over senses is necessary.
For example, Guru Dronacharya once asked his disciples - the Kauravas and the Pandavas - to aim at the eye of an artificial bird sitting on a tree during his education. On asking him a disciple said, I can see you, the tree, and the bird sitting on it. The other said that I can see the tree and the bird. But Arjuna said that I can see only the eye of the bird. Besides that, I'm not seeing anything and he hit the right target. In this way, through practice, we should also focus our attention on the task we have decided on.
The third element of Shata property is 'uparati', that is, to be indifferent to the work other than the work one is doing in the present. With all your strength, ability, and dedication, complete your current work with selflessness. Now one may ask, how can one show selflessness at work? You can use these three steps:
- Give credit to others when the team does well.
- Offer to help someone at work who is struggling at a task.
- Volunteer to do something nobody else wants to do.
- Take time to mentor “the new guy/girl”.
The fourth is 'Titiksha', that is, not to be distracted by the favorable or unfavorable circumstances that come in the course of one's work.
Fifth is 'Shraddha', i.e., who are our guides in our work, having full faith in the words of the relevant scriptures, do not have any doubt about it, otherwise, we can get distracted in our path.
The sixth element is 'solution' i.e. concentration of intellect and mind. In the Gita, Lord Arjuna has been told, 'In this Karmayoga there is only one definite intellect, but the intelligence of intelligent, fruitful men with unstable thoughts are certainly of many distinctions and infinite. In this way, even in the absence of material wealth, if we have the above six assets, then we can make proper progress in the worldly and charitable or spiritual field by improving our nature and actions by deciding right and wrong. We should make continuous efforts to keep bringing these qualities in us through practice.
