 I Am Legend

I’ve had enough of this world’s cruel game,
Pushing me down, drowning me in shame.
Once at the peak, you threw me from grace,
But I danced with despair, with a smile on my face.

You tried to halt my relentless stride,
Plunging my life into shadows where hope would hide.
But I am no puppet, I refuse your control,
Even alone, I remain whole.

You broke my will, shook my core,
Made me question who I was before.
But today, I stand with strength anew,
And show the world what I can do.

Behind this beauty, an ugly truth lies,
A force so fierce, it'll darken your skies.
I unsheathe my sword, no longer rusted,
And in this battle, I’ll be trusted.

You’ve had your turn, now it’s mine,
No more tears, it’s time to shine.
I’ll rise again, to heights unknown,
And claim the mountain as my throne.

No road too hard, no path too steep,
I’ll conquer all, while you lie asleep.
Mock me now, but soon you’ll see,
The legend that I was born to be.

Social Proof- Don’t be the part of the herd

“The one who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd.”

You are going to your office. At an intersection, you encounter a group of people, all staring at the sky. Without even thinking about it, you peer upward too, to check what is happening. Why? Because of Social proof.

In the middle of a play, when the actor enacts a great scene, someone begins to clap and suddenly the whole theatre joins in. You do, too.

Why? Social proof.

After the play, you walk out and ask the valet to get your car. You watch how the people in front of you give a tip to the valet,  even though, officially, the service is included in the ticket price, What do you do? You probably leave a tip as well.

Social proof, sometimes roughly termed the “Herd Instinct,” dictates that individuals feel they are behaving correctly when they act the same as other people. In other words, the more people who follow a certain idea, the better or truer we deem the idea to be. And the more people who display a certain behavior, the more appropriate this behavior is judged by others.

This is, of course, absurd.

This behavior exists and is seen in fashion, investment. management techniques, stock markets, hobbies, religion, and diets. It can paralyze whole cultures, and in extreme behavior, it is seen when sects commit collective suicide.

A simple experiment, carried out in the 1950s by legendary psychologist Solomon Asch, shows how peer pressure can warp common sense.

A subject was shown a line drawn on paper, and next to it three lines— numbered 1, 2, and 3—one shorter, one longer, and one the same length as the original one. He or she must indicate which of the three lines corresponds to the original one.

If the person is alone in the room, he gives correct answers because the task is really quite simple. Now five other people enter the room; they are all actors, which the subject does not know. One after another, they give wrong answers, saying “number 1,” although it’s very clear that number 3 is the correct answer.

Then it is the subject’s turn again. In one-third of cases, he will answer incorrectly to match the other people’s responses.

Why do we act like this?

Well, in the past, following others was a good survival strategy. Suppose that thousands of years ago you were with your hunter-gatherer friends, and suddenly they all bolted. What would you have done?

Would you have stayed put, scratching your head, and weighing up whether what you were looking at was a lion or something that just looked like a lion but was in fact a harmless animal that could serve as good meat?

No, you would have sprinted after your friends. Later on, when you were safe, you could have reflected on what had actually happened.

Those who acted differently —and I am sure there were some—became meat for the animals.

We are the direct heirs of those who copied the others’ behavior. This pattern is so deeply rooted in us that we still use it today, even when it offers no survival advantage.

Comedy and talk shows make use of social proof by inserting canned laughter at strategic spots, inciting the audience to laugh along.

We are no longer in the jungle where our first reaction has to be survival. I am reminded of English novelist W. Somerset Maugham’s wise words: “If fifty million people say something foolish, it is still foolish.”

Don’t follow the herd blindly. We tend to follow the herd because we think our different opinion might lead to embarrassment but what we never understand is that people love as well as admire the courage, when one gives his or her true opinion or walks on their own path.

Chanakya once said, “it is better to go alone than being on the same path as a foolish crowd.”

Don’t follow the herd blindly, don’t look for social proof and stay blessed forever.

How to manage stress during a lockdown?

“Stress is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere”-Erma Bombeck

Stress is inevitable and has always been present & will continue to exist regardless of age, gender, class, wealth, profession, and the current situation. It is not necessarily always harmful but may function as an asset if in a controlled manner. One may consider stress as a catastrophe as it leads to unpleasant consequences, & in the current situation we cannot ignore its inevitability, it is necessary to handle stressful situations carefully.

In simple terms, stress is like fire-more precisely, embers, permanent embers. We can either control them to be harmless embers and enjoy their glow or fan them into huge fires that may create colossal wrecks.

Stress as a boon:

What would happen if I tell you that you have to learn nursery rhymes for a month? You will feel bored and won’t be able to focus or become productive. What would happen if I say that you have to give an impromptu presentation in front of Bill Gates just half an hour before the presentation? You will be highly stressed out & again won’t be able to focus. Will you be able to focus on any of the situations? NO. But if you do a bit challenging task, you feel moderate stress but you will be able to focus & be more productive because in such situations your brain releases a chemical known as noradrenaline and you will feel more productive. Frederick Febritius the author of ‘the leading brain’ states that our brain does not give its best when skillset & challenges are aligned but when the work is a bit more challenging than skill set.

Stress as a curse:

We saw that in the right magnitude stress acts as a boon but it may turn into a curse if taken a lot of stress. Stress can affect our life emotionally, mentally, physically, or economically. Stress affects your thinking process as well as your life because your relationship suffers whether it be with your family or your colleagues or with friends. If you are suffering from occupational stress then work may seem scornful & life meaningless. Stress has hidden & much deeper consequences like; depression, low confidence.

How to handle stress:

It is time to understand how to manage stress? Stress management is an art through which we prevent stress from turning into a curse and continue to use it as a boon. It is a skill that allows you to remain ever happy. If stress is like fire then consider stress management as a fire extinguisher that smothers this fire when it starts creating havoc. The few most popular & effective methods to deal with stress are:

Positive-thinking

1.

  1. Manufacture only good thoughts: Watch your thoughts as they become words. Watch your words as they become actions. Watch your action as they become your habits and watch your habits as they form your character. Hence, try that only positive thoughts go in your brain as they will bring you positive results. Try to stay away from negative influences whether it be media or people. Some people are like garbage trucks they fill the mind of everyone around them with useless negativity. Don’t let your mind grasp this garbage & store it.

2.

 2. Detachment and letting go: We should develop an ability to detach ourselves from things that we can’t control. Sometimes we get tensed about things that are not in our hands, for example, people are still not trying to adapt to this lockdown situation. They are still stressed about things like ‘cases are rising every day, we have to understand that we have to adapt & move on, we can help in two ways ‘stay home and follow guidelines’ and ‘spread awareness’. See how positively you can use current situation, you can give time to your hobby or spent some time with your family. Hence, detach yourself from everything that you feel is not in your control.

Detachment-and-letting-things-go

 3. Keep yourself busy: You may think that being busy increases our stress, but that is not always correct. You don’t sit idle when you are sitting idle, you tend to think things that you should not. Keep yourself busy with things that you love. This is ‘ikigai’ a Japanese formula for long life. Iki meaning “to live” and gai meaning “reason.” Therefore, your Ikigai is your reason to live. Japanese believe that if you keep yourself busy in doing things that you love, you may live a long, healthy & happy life.

Laughter-the-best-medicine
4. Laughter- the best medicine: We all know laughter kills stress but we still prefer to produce stress even after knowing its consequences. Laughter is nature’s greatest tonic. A good laugh shakes up the liver and we immediately feel better in every way. How to laugh? Read funny books, jokes and chat with people who have a nice sense of humor or watch a comedy movie. Laugher is a prayer. If you have learned to laugh, you have learned to pray.

What’s Right isn't always popular... – Arjun Pandit

"What’s Right isn't always popular...

And what's popular isn't always Right..."

Let me share a story with you today…

Once upon a time, there was a man named Jack, who used to work at the track interchange but once fall into a dilemma and was not able to decide because a gaggle of youngsters was playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the opposite not. Only one child played on the unused track, the remainder on the operational track. A train is coming, and jack is just beside the track interchange. Jack can make the train change its course to the unused track and save most of the kids. However, that might also mean the lone child playing by the unused track would be sacrificed. Now jack changes the course of the train to an unused track and sacrifices only one child.

Let's pause to think what kind of decision we would make if we were in place of jack................

Most people would agree with jack and they might choose to divert the course of the train and sacrifice only one child. Save most of the youngsters at the expense of just one child was a rational decision most of the people would make, morally and emotionally.

But, have you ever thought that the kid who chose to play on the unused track had made the proper decision to play at a secure place? Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.

But the great critic Leo Velshi Julian who told the story said he wouldn't attempt to change the course of the train because he believed that the youngsters playing on the operational track were aware that the track was still in use, which they might run away once they hear the train’s sirens.

Now, if the train was diverted, that lone child would die because he never expects that a train could come across on the unused track! Further, that track wasn't in use probably because it had been not safe. If the train was diverted to such a track, we may put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in our plan to save few kids thinking that the train may run over them, we'd find yourself sacrificing many people. While we are all aware that life is filled with tough decisions that require to be made, we might not realize that a hasty decision might not always be the right one.

This kind of dilemma happens around us every day. In the office, community, politics, and particularly during a democratic society, the proper is usually sacrificed for the interest of the bulk, regardless of how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and the way far-sighted and knowledgeable the wise are.

 The Giving Tree

“Thoughts are in itself like a magician. By changing them, you can change your life….!”

Today, let me share a story.

Once upon a time, there was a wish-fulfillment tree in a dense forest, and it was believed that if you sit under the tree and make any wish, your wish would be fulfilled immediately. Very few people knew this because no one dared to go to that dense forest.

Once upon a time, a businessman, who was going for a meeting, got tired and sat down under the tree to rest. Due to tiredness, he fell asleep. He felt very hungry as soon as he woke up, looking around and thought- “I wish I could get something to eat!”' Immediately a plate full of tasty dishes floated in the air and came in front of him. The businessman ate a lot of food and started thinking after the hunger subsided... “I wish I could get something to drink...” Immediately, there came many juices floating in the air in front of him.

After drinking the juice, he sat down and started thinking – “I am not dreaming at all. Never seen nor heard of food appearing in the air... Surely there is a ghost on this tree who will feed me and eat me later.” Immediately a ghost came in front of him and ate him.

Now there is a similar tree that we all have inside us, but we are unknown about its power. This tree is our brain. From this Story you can learn that our brain is the wish tree, you will get what you wish for. Our subconscious mind has the power to convert our thoughts into reality. Our subconscious mind believes in all the thoughts that are conceived by our conscious mind. So, whatever your conscious mind thinks, our subconscious mind follows and shapes our thinking. The subconscious mind thinks of different ways to fulfill our wishes fast. Most people get bad things in life… because they think negative thoughts. For example:

  • Man thinks most of the time - I should not get sick due to getting wet in the rain... and he gets sick..!
  • Man thinks - my luck is bad... and his luck gets spoiled..!
  • Man thinks – I might fail…. And he fails…!
  • Man thinks – I might be late…and he is late.

In this way you will see that your subconscious mind fulfills your desires, honestly like a wish tree..! Therefore you must allow thoughts to enter your brain carefully. So always think positively. The outside world is exactly the way we think from the inside. Our thoughts only make things beautiful and ugly.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE ?

Life is a beautiful journey that is meant to be embraced to the fullest every day. But that is not possible in real life, is it? We all our running like rats for the whole day and never get a moment to zoom out and see what are we doing. We need to understand that our life as a is a gift and we should be thankful for it. Just imagine the life of your pet for a day, they can’t express themselves neither they have a mind like us to think. So, our life as human is important that is for sure. According to Hindu Vedas and Puranas you get a human birth after living the lives of 8,400,000 other species.  And science proves that after a lot of evolution humans took birth. This means that life is important. So from now on stop thinking that your life is a waste and add a flavor to your life by giving it a purpose.

what-is-the-purpose-of-life-?

What is the purpose of life?

What is the purpose of life? We all tried to find the answer of this question since ancient times. Some people tried to find the answer of this question in holy books, by meditating or in science. Still we fail to answer this question. And there is one day in our life where we think that what the hell is the purpose of my life? Well today I am going to help you find it. But first we need to understand the difference between purpose and goals.

Difference between purpose and goals:

Many a time’s people confuse purpose with goals. Goals are achievable but you cannot say that you achieved the purpose of your life. Let’s take an example – a kid say’s that he wants to become a doctor.  This is his goal. Another kid says that he wants to be happy and make others happy. This is purpose. The kid who wanted to become a doctor becomes one, now what after it? Goal have an end, purpose don’t. and that is the reason finding the purpose is important and for some people finding the purpose life is their purpose.

Purpose Of Life by Religion:

Generally, religions have in common two most important teachings regarding the meaning of life:

1) the ethic of the reciprocity of love among fellow humans for the purpose of uniting with a Supreme Being, the provider of that ethic

2) spiritual formation towards an afterlife or eternal life as a continuation of physical life.

Purpose Of Life by Science:

Natural scientists look for the purpose of life within the structure and function of life itself. This question also falls upon social scientists to answer. They attempt to do so by studying and explaining the behaviours and interactions of human beings (and every other type of animal as well). Again, science is limited to the search for elements that promote the purpose of a specific life form (individuals and societies), but these findings can only be suggestive when it comes to the overall purpose and meaning.

What do I have to say:

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience. You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. And not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.

Some Quotes on Life:

1. “The purpose of our lives is to be happy.” — Dalai Lama

2. “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” — John Lennon

3. “Get busy living or get busy dying.” — Stephen King

4. “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” — Mae West

5. “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”– Thomas A. Edison

6. “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.”– Albert Einstein

7. “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”– Babe Ruth

8. “Money and success don’t change people; they merely amplify what is already there.” — Will Smith

9. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.” — Steve Jobs

10. “Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.” — Seneca
